Canadian Kelp Resources and Ocean Regenerative Aquaculture Enter Agreement to Produce Kelp-based Biostimulants
March 5, 2021
Canadian Kelp and Ocean Regenerative are teaming up to develop, produce and market soil and plant biostimulant products to help agriculture and horticultural farmers improve the resilience of soils and enable plants to grow stronger and produce higher yielding crops. The two companies have agreed on a research and development program to bring unique biostimulants to market utilizing Pacific Ocean species farmed along the coast of British Columbia.
Dr. Louis Druehl, president of Canadian Kelp, is a renowned marine botanist and a pioneer in seaweed cultivation. Louis will lead and oversee research and development, including species selection and propagation. Ocean Regenerative will be responsible for operations related to cultivation, processing, marketing, and distribution.
Ocean Regenerative, founded in 2020 by David Parker and Matthias Kempe, is focused on introducing and producing organic biostimulants from kelp farmed in the Pacific Ocean, using regenerative cultivation practices that provide essential habitat for other species and ecosystem services that include mitigation of ocean acidification, storm surge protection along coastlines, and carbon capture and sequestration to soils from application of biostimulants.
Working with Nature to Solve Global Challenges
Global population is expected to grow by 25% to over nine billion people by 2050, and agricultural output and food demand is predicted to increase by over 60%. Ocean Regenerative and Canadian Kelp are working together to address the need for greater food security in the face of population growth and food scarcity in a time of climate change. Increasingly, farmers are experiencing new challenges to build resiliency into their crops to resist abiotic stresses associated with extreme variations in temperature and rainfall. Kelp biostimulants help promote soil health and a variety of plant growth properties, such as improved root growth, stronger resistance to environmental stresses, larger and faster flowering, and increased fruit production and yield. This is achieved by boosting the plant and soil immune system and increasing its ability to absorb nutrients. Kelp based biostimulants are developed by extracting the active ingredients from raw seaweed and processing the compounds to a desired size which are engineered to stimulate specific plant and soil behaviours.
